Common Good

INTRODUCTION

There are 3 things I will share to you today. 1) AN EXERCISE ON POSITIVITY; 2) ON THE COMMON GOOD and, 3) GETTING INVOLVED (Truth and Love).

I am a believer of first. First is significant because it prepares us for the surprising second, third, fourth, fifth and so on. There is no second chance at first impression. But butterflies are God’s proof that there is second chance. Sino ang nakakaalala sa kanilang 13th love? Or your 15th kiss? Automatic yan! Lalo na yung first kiss. Mas automatic yan at very vivid. (Try reading/guessing the first letter of _______’s first kiss. Look me in the eye, focus, think of the first letter of the name of your first kiss. Snap your finger……….Letter D…Dante, Daniel) (Palakpakan natin si ________).

I am also fascinated with formal structures and behaviors. When I joined this Monday ritual for the first time, I was FASCINATED with the energy of everyone. It was March 23. We did this (walk with shoulders down; recite the “Panunumpa”) and Mondays thereafter and so I looked for some possible reasons. And I found 3.

  1. They must have been exhausted last weekend;
  2. They must be too old for a certain level of energy; and
  3. They have been doing this for 100 years already, the words have become dead and barren signifying nothing but empty semantics.

The first might be true but not the last two. Unless someone is too old for a certain level of positivity here. Pakitaas ang kamay ng matanda na. Or maybe I am not just comfortable with the level of SOLEMNITY during Monday.

Firsts are significant because they set the tone or theme. Same thing with the first hour or first day of the week in an organizational setting, it will set the tone for the whole week. So let me set the tone for this week. Let’s have a short yet powerful exercise.

  1. AN EXERCISE ON POSITIVITY

Leader: How are you?

People: I feel good. I feel great. I am blessed. (3x)

You repeat those 9 words in your minds

You can also try the opposite. I’m a loser, I’m freak, I’m doomed. I assure you, you are 50% failure. We did the exercise to condition our mind with positivity and that you help me overcome my stage fright.

Getting Involved

It is not enough to vote

We must do our due share

In turning the tide for our people

Make clear our stand on key issues

Let our voices be heard,

Let our actions speak.

We cannot leave public destiny

In the hands of selfish individuals

Whose interests are limited to their own.

  1. ON THE COMMON GOOD
    1. There is an ancient idea that we have lost, but can and should find again. It’s called simply the common good. It goes back many centuries, but the need for a new dialogue about what it means and what its practice would require of us has never seemed more critical. Our politics have become so polarized and increasingly volatile; and our political institutions have lost the public trust. (Jim Wallis)

a.  Definition: That which benefits society as a whole including generations yet to come or yet to be born.

b. History (There is a paradigm shift in the understanding of CG in the course of history: COMMUNITY to RELATIVITY/INDIVIDUALITY)

  1. Classical – (Aristotle) CG is needed in a community. Polis exists for the sake of a good life…and we lead a good life by contributing to the community.
  2. Medieval – (Augustine) A republic is a people joined together by their pursuit of the CG and the content of that good is the Summum Bonum (the Highest Good)
  • Modern – (Adam Smith) CG is aggregation of individual goods. If you pursue your personal gain you promote that of society’s gain more effectively. Nemo dat quod non habet.
  • Contemporary – The CG is a summation of private goods.
  • Scenario Today – Appeals to the CG have surfaced in discussions of business, CSR, Education and environment and many social commentators are claiming that our most fundamental problems grow out of a widespread pursuit of individual interests.
    1. Iberian Influence (Theistic) – Jesus’ death on the Cross was the ultimate sacrifice for the common good (salvation, communion with God)
    2. Anglo-Saxon (democratic) – The power of the sovereign state flows from the people. The State has the duty to promote the public good/interest.

c. Gap/Problems

  1. Pluralism – The very idea of common good is inconsistent with a pluralistic society like ours. Different people have different ideas about what is worthwhile or what constitutes “the good life” for human beings, differences that have increased during the last few decades as the voices of more and more previously silenced groups, such as women and minorities have been heard.

Given these differences, it will be impossible for us to agree on what particular kind of social system and institutions and even if we agreed about the relative values things have for us like affordable health system, functional educational system and clean environment, some will say that more should be invested in health, others on education while others will say more on environment.

  1. Unequal sharing of Burden Problem – Maintaining a CG often requires that particular individuals/groups bear costs that are much greater than those borne by others.
  2. Individualism – Our culture views society as comprised of separate independent individuals who are free to pursue their own individual goals and interests without interference from others.
  1. Questions
    1. How is CG be balanced against Individual goods
    2. How is CG be balanced with equally competing CGs (LuzViMin) (Elite/Middle/Poor) (Self-sufficient LGU/Highly dependent LGU) (Large Mining Sector – Small Mining Sector)
  • Whose N.E.W.S.? Which community
  1. GETTING INVOLVED (Inspired by Card. Tagle)
    2. Pinapaalalahan tayo ngayon pa lang na ituon an gating mga mata at puso sa kabutihang pangkalahatan, the COMMON GOOD.
At marapat lamang.
Trust is a quality of relationships.

CONCLUSION (Inspired by Card. Tagle)

  1. The object of our desire is the good. The object of our knowledge is the truth. Kaya pag may nakita tayong maganda o gwapo, napapatingin o napapakindat o napapalaway. Our will or volition is attracted to the good. One of my philosophies in life is this, Every Human Heart is Good. At its deepest core, the heart of a person is good. Truth is something which is also good, that is why our intellectual faculty, or intellect has for its object that which is true. We are allergic to lies and falsities. Suppose to be.
Pero ang kailangan natin ay ang tinatawag nilang “truthfulness,” not only possessing specific truths contained in bits of information but being a truthful person. If trust is a quality of relationships, then truth must be a function of the person who engages in such a relationship.
  6. Truth and love will make a person truthful and honorable.  The passion for truth must be accompanied by a passion called love. Truth without love will lead to cold intellectualism.
  7. Para maging tunay na marangal na lingkod, passion for truth, passion for love combined in the person to become truthful and honorable.
  8. Bilang pangwakas, paalaala lamang, yung ating pagiging mararangal at makatotohanang lingkod bayan sana ang magtulak sa atin para hanapin ang tinatawag na kabutihang pangkalahatan, the “common good” which is the development of the social environment that will enable every individual to grow and to develop his or her potentials.
