Tetangco wants stronger powers for AMLC to run after tax dodgers (PDI) 01-06-17

With six months left in his term as the chief monetary and banking regulator, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. Thursday began a final push to reform the country’s financial system including a proposal to strengthen anti-money laundering laws that will likely be scrutinized thoroughly by lawmakers.

Speaking before members of the Rotary Club of Manila on Thursday, the BSP chief said the measures were meant to strengthen the local banking system, and to align the Philippine practices with increasingly strict international measures meant to combat cross border flows of illicit funds.

 

Lawmakers buck higher taxes on fuel (PS) 01-06-17

MANILA, Philippines – Calling it ill timed and burdensome, several senators and a member of the House expressed opposition yesterday to the plan of the administration to impose higher taxes on fuel to generate more revenues for the government.

Senate Minority Leader Ralph Recto said the proposal was ill timed because world oil prices were on the way up and that there was no fiscal crisis to justify it.

“Just improve collection efficiency and stop smuggling,” Recto told the administration.

DoF to review BIR salary standardization exemption (BW) 01-06-17

THE FINANCE department plans to review a measure exempting the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) from the prescribed salary levels for public employees after the implementation of a merit-based rewards and penalties law for the government’s revenue collecting bureaus.
Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III said that the Department of Finance (DoF) will implement the so-called Lateral Attrition Law before starting talks on BIR’s exemption under the Salary Standardization Law (SSL).
